Arts and Audiences
This elective focuses on the relationship between the arts and audiences. The elective takes an interdisciplinary approach and builds on perspectives from fields such as science, art history, sociology, pedagogy, philosophy, museum and media studies, as well as professional practices such as education, policy, marketing and curatorship. The aim is to show students the different ways in which art institutions relate to audiences and influence each other. The elective is rooted in both academic literature and professional practice. Lectures provide an overview of the topics covered and present different positions in the field. Workshops focus on academic literature relevant to the topics, as well as practical professional skills. Also in Dutch.

Culture and Economy
This elective focuses on the relationship between the cultural sector and society from an economic perspective, with particular attention to economic actors. Key topics include the art market, creative cities and cultural entrepreneurship. The art market is an integral and important part of the creative industries sector. Students learn how artworks are traded and how value is created in the process between artists, gallery owners, auction houses, dealers, collectors and museums. They read and discuss a number of groundbreaking works by leading scholars and practitioners in the sector to discuss and learn about the roles and ecosystem of the art market. Topics covered include the historical development of the art market, the value chain, current players and institutions in the art market, and their strategies and positioning. Market growth and increasing interest in the art market, supported in many countries by a strong government presence, have led to growing demand worldwide and, as a result, increasing prices. The different art markets in various countries, sectors and genres are
compared. Another important part of this elective course is the study of the concepts of “creative cities” and “cultural industries” and their development, and the role of entrepreneurship and innovation in the cultural sector, thereby further deepening knowledge and understanding of cultural policy and cultural management.
