ART, CULTURE AND POLITICS (MA)
Art and culture in the public domain
In this module, we look at the dynamics that arise in the cultural field from the perspective of the public domain. In principle, what is public is accessible to everyone. And what is defined as public is largely determined by politics on the one hand and the market on the other. The relationships between these three domains are constantly changing, not least as a result of globalisation processes. What art is, how it functions, how it is produced, distributed and consumed is largely determined by the changing relationships between these three domains. Whereas until the 1980s, art and culture were seen as “public goods”, produced and distributed in a more or less autonomous cultural field supported by the state, they have now become, on the one hand, consumer objects produced and distributed by “cultural entrepreneurs” and, on the other hand, instruments that are also expected to generate a social impact.
