ART POLICY & ART BUSINESS (MA)
Core course Art Policy & Art Business
The course provides a broad theoretical basis for the Art Policy and Art Business programme within the Master’s in Arts and Culture Studies. Using theoretical, historical and contemporary texts, students delve into the most important ideas about how the art world works and the roles of various actors within it, such as artists themselves, cultural institutions, governments, advisory bodies, critics and the public. Students learn to critically analyse these texts by relating them to current debates and their own case studies in a number of written assignments and a final paper.

ART POLICY & ART BUSINESS (MA)
Cultural sponsorship & patronage
Art cannot flourish without deliberate support. This is true today, but in previous centuries too, the creation and dissemination of art and culture was promoted and supported in various ways. This course deals with cultural sponsorship and patronage in the past and present, and with how we can use knowledge about cultural support in research into (1) the relationship between art and society, (2) the functioning of cultural networks, (3) the power relations within (and sometimes outside) the art world, (4) the circumstances and conditions for the production and distribution of art, and (5) processes of (self-)staging and legitimisation of benefactors and recipients of support.

The transhistorical museum
This course provides an overview of recent developments in the international museum field that are specifically related to “transhistorical curating”, a form of exhibition-making and institutional thinking in which artworks and artefacts from different periods (and cultural or geographical zones) are connected with each other. The phenomenon of “the transhistorical museum” is placed in a historical, contemporary and theoretical perspective, with many examples from museum practice. Collections and exhibitions are highlighted, as well as the relationship with the art market and the perspective of artists and private collectors. There is room for speakers from the professional field and at least one day excursion. The assignments within this course will be designed in such a way that they are directly related to museum practice.

There is also room for speakers from the professional field and at least one day trip (if possible) to the internationally renowned TEFAF art fair in Maastricht. The assignments within this course are designed in such a way that you can also focus specifically on your preferred art form and/or period and any specialism you may have chosen within that field.
