The Introduction to Philanthropy Studies module offers you an introduction to the academic world of philanthropy and forms the basis for the other modules in the postgraduate programme in Philanthropy. The domain of philanthropy
These first meetings in the series ‘Managing Philanthropic Funds’ provide an overview of philanthropy and the philanthropic sector in the Netherlands. Participants are introduced to the concept and history of philanthropy in the Netherlands, the significance of philanthropy in the current social context, and the role philanthropy may play in the near future. You will receive the most important statistical overviews and trends based on the macroeconomic study ‘Giving in the Netherlands’. The philanthropic sector is mapped out and Dutch developments are placed in an international context.

Government and private initiative
Participation by citizens and social organisations is playing an increasingly important role in the creation of public services. People solve social problems themselves by mobilising their own time, energy and (where applicable) financial resources. Private funds develop new initiatives to solve social problems. The voluntary contribution of money, goods, time and expertise for the common good is called philanthropy. But what does this active citizenship look like in practice at the local level? To what extent are citizens actually willing to get involved at the local level?
