Scriptie: A Good Patron: A Redefined Private Law Framework for Art Patronage and the Value It Brings to Artists, Patrons, and Dutch Society
This thesis explores the underlying value-structures of art patronage in Dutch society. Research indicates that the current fiscal approach chosen by the Dutch government does not achieve its intended effects on the stimulation of art patronage. The interpersonal relationship between artist and patron receives little notice within the current public governance scope. However, recent literature from the social sciences challenges this perspective. By reframing the artist-patron relation as transactional, parties are granted new agency in the pursued of their shared goal: a love of the arts and the intent to further its value in society. This thesis will add another dimension to this transaction and evaluate its economic value. Ultimately, the agreement may be key to the integration of these different value-definitions from the governance, social and economic spheres.
