This thesis was written with the aim of mapping out the functioning of the Cultuurfonds donor circles. While previous studies focus on the patronage relationships between donors and artists, this research focuses on collective patronage and the mediating role of the Cultuurfonds. The results of this research show that the Cultuurfonds fulfils various mediating roles, including the role of a symbolic banker. With the donor circles, the Cultuurfonds offers donors and artists a place to trade capital and gain prestige, as Bourdieu discusses in his theory. The donor circles function as a networking place for donors, artists and for the Cultuurfonds. This research has shown that three elements can serve as a source of inspiration for a potential new donor circle.
