When speaking about patronage in the arts, people tend to make the assumption artists and donors do not communicate in the same language. However, this has not been academically researched. This master thesis aims to answer the question whether there is a difference in language between individual artists and donors when starting a gift relationship. The concept of language culture by Agar is used as the central theory to get a better understanding of the amalgamation between language and discourse. Through rich points, disruptions in mutual understanding between artists and donors are foregrounded. Two focus groups were organised in which two artists as well as two donors participated. The language cultures of the participants were analysed, based on their interaction concerning the topic of starting a gift relationship.
